Spending time in the sun is a must in the summer. But it also means your skin is exposed to harmful UV rays that can lead to premature skin aging, painful sunburns, and even skin cancer. That can all be prevented with a good sunscreen, but which one to choose? There are a lot of options out there, so don’t get duped! Read our sunscreen guide to get the facts on what’s most important in a sunscreen.
Pick the right SPF
This can vary based on your skin type, SPF 30 is the most commonly recommended. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays and SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays. So, the difference between 30 and 50 is about 1 percent. We highly recommend you pick at least SPF 30. SPF 50 is great for those days you spend the entire day out in the sun.
How often should you apply your sunscreen
Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours for the best protection. Even if your skin isn’t burning, you could be at risk from harmful UV rays after that period.
How much sunscreen should I use?
A good rule of thumb is to use 1 teaspoon for each body part. A teaspoon for your face and neck, arm, leg, chest, and back.
Does SPF block all types of harmful UV rays?
SPF protects against ultraviolet B rays, which is what causes sunburn. But it may not protect against ultraviolet A rays, which can cause skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. If you want to be sure you’re protected against both types of UV rays, look for a sunscreen that’s labeled “broad-spectrum.”
